Abu Dhabi’s green bus fleet surpasses 1.3 million kilometres, marking a shift from trial to mainstream

Abu Dhabi’s fleet of eco-friendly buses has now traveled over 1.3 million kilometres, according to the Integrated Transport Centre, also known as Abu Dhabi Mobility. This is part of the emirate’s ongoing effort to boost lower-emission public transportation options.

Their fleet, which started operating in 2024, includes both hydrogen fuel cell buses and battery-electric models. Seeing this milestone reach means the program is moving beyond just a trial phase and is becoming a more established feature of the city’s transport system. It also stands as a visible example of how public transit is supporting the UAE’s broader goals to reduce carbon emissions.

The transport authority highlighted that this achievement reflects a bigger trend, more use of cleaner tech in everyday operations. They also framed it as a piece of a larger puzzle, aimed at improving service quality, boosting efficiency, and shrinking the environmental impact of daily commuting across the emirate.

In celebration, Abu Dhabi Mobility launched a “Public Transport to Work” campaign timed with World Public Transport Day. This initiative encourages employees to choose buses and other shared mobility options for their daily commute, with the idea of reducing dependence on private cars and fostering more sustainable travel habits.

World Public Transport Day, organized by the International Association of Public Transport (or UITP), brings cities and transport agencies together to expand shared mobility networks. In Abu Dhabi, this initiative also serves as a reminder that public transport policies are increasingly connected to climate goals, and not just about controlling traffic flow.

The green bus program ties into the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy, which has become a key reference point for both government and industry.
