Dubai: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Dubai Municipality bolster collaboration at Moro Hub, focusing on AI integration, green data centres, and digital innovation to advance the emirate’s smart city ambitions and sustainability targets under the 2050 Net Zero strategy. His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), recently welcomed a high-level delegation from Dubai Municipality at Moro Hub, a key subsidiary of Digital DEWA, the digital arm of DEWA. The visit, led by His Excellency Marwan Bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, focused on enhancing collaboration between the two entities in advancing digital transformation and smart city initiatives. Also present were senior executives from Digital DEWA and Moro Hub, underlining the strategic importance of this engagement. Reflecting on the visit, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer emphasised the alignment with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to position Dubai as a global leader in sustainability, innovation, and digital excellence. Al Tayer highlighted the necessity for unified efforts among government bodies to accelerate the deployment of smart, secure, and sustainable infrastructure, referencing the UAE’s ambitious Net Zero by 2050 Strategy along with Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. He positioned Digital DEWA as a pivotal enabler of this transformation, delivering integrated technologies that bolster operational agility and reinforce Dubai’s status as an environmental and digital pioneer. During the visit, the delegation received an extensive briefing on Moro Hub’s comprehensive service portfolio and toured its state-of-the-art facilities, which include a Network Operations Centre, Security Operations Centre, a Smart Cities and IoT Command Centre, and the company’s Green Data Centre. Moro Hub’s Green Certificate presentation to Dubai Municipality symbolised the environmental commitment fostered through hosting IT workloads at the Green Data Centre, promising considerable carbon emission reductions—a tangible step forward in environmental stewardship. His Excellency Marwan Bin Ghalita noted the critical role of partnerships like those with Moro Hub in Dubai’s evolution into a smart and sustainable city. He stressed the importance of leveraging digital capabilities to enhance smart city projects, improve public services, and fortify infrastructure resilience. The delegation’s tour underscored Moro Hub’s responsibility in managing vital data operations and securing smart city infrastructure, directly supporting goals of urban resilience, sustainability, and service to citizens. Moro Hub remains a strategic digital partner for both public and private sectors, offering a wide array of services such as cloud hosting, smart city and IoT solutions, advanced technologies, cybersecurity, managed services, and enterprise solutions. Its facilities are intentionally developed to align with the UAE’s long-term ambitions to cultivate a knowledge-based, innovation-driven, and sustainable economy. Complementing this partnership, DEWA has recently reported remarkable progress in its digital transformation journey. In 2024 alone, DEWA facilitated over 14 million digital transactions—a 12% increase from the prior year—through a fully integrated and automated digital customer service platform. DEWA’s ‘Services 360’ policy has achieved complete automation and nearly universal digital adoption, illustrating the authority’s commitment to enhancing customer experience and operational efficiency. Technological integration at DEWA extends beyond customer services. The organisation has incorporated AI technologies into its transmission network, notably within digital substations that significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. Their virtual assistant, ‘Rammas’, has interacted with over 10 million customers since 2017 and was recently augmented with ChatGPT to improve service delivery. DEWA also boasts ISO certification for AI trustworthiness, marking a pioneering achievement in the UAE government sector. Further innovations include the development of the world’s first intelligent gas turbine and plant controllers, utilising AI and machine learning to optimise operational efficiency and sustainability. Generative AI adoption has broadened within DEWA’s systems, enhancing everything from customer engagement to internal processes such as human resources and governance. These efforts coincide with advancements in renewable energy technologies, including enhanced solar panel efficiency and the current share of clean energy in Dubai’s energy mix reaching approximately 20%, reinforcing DEWA’s commitment to sustainable growth. To foster ongoing innovation, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer inaugurated the DEWA Disruptive Lab, a hub designed to push forward the Innovation and Future Shaping Framework inspired by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision. The lab supports initiatives like the DEWAVerse, a platform that leverages the Metaverse for digital service delivery, aiming to anticipate and shape the future of energy and water services through cutting-edge solutions and Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies. Taken together, these developments highlight Dubai’s integrated approach to building a smart, sustainable city powered by advanced digital infrastructure and robust partnerships between governmental entities. The collaboration between DEWA, its subsidiary Moro Hub, and Dubai Municipality exemplifies the city’s commitment to innovation, environmental responsibility, and the provision of exemplary services to its residents and businesses.
