Ras Al Khaimah, UAE: Emerge, Masdar and EDF Group’s joint venture, partners with Turbotim to deploy 1.52 MWp solar and 5 MWh battery storage at two UAE sites, aiming to slash 2.1 million tons of carbon emissions annually and accelerate industrial decarbonisation across the GCC.

Emerge, a collaboration between Masdar and EDF Group, has recently formalised an agreement with Turbotim, a UAE-based energy company, to launch a rooftop solar and battery storage initiative at Turbotim’s facilities in Ras Al Khaimah. This agreement was inked during the Make it in the Emirates Forum, highlighting the importance of such projects in the region’s transition towards sustainable energy solutions.

The ambitious project will encompass two hybrid installations, each featuring 763 kilowatts peak (kWp) of rooftop solar photovoltaic panels alongside 2.5 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage. This totals to an impressive 1.52 megawatts peak (MWp) of solar capacity and 5 MWh of storage. Emerge will provide a comprehensive turnkey solution over a span of 20 years, which includes financing, design, procurement, construction, and ongoing operations and maintenance. The transition from traditional diesel generators to solar energy is expected to cut carbon emissions by over 2.1 million tons annually, a figure that equates to the electricity consumption of approximately 240 households or the reduction of 474 petrol-powered vehicles from the roads.

Dr. Saad Al Tameemi, Chairman of Turbotim, remarked on the significance of this partnership, stating that it marks a crucial advancement towards more sustainable and efficient energy use. The push towards renewable energy resources is indicative of a wider trend within the region whereby companies are increasingly recognising the necessity to move away from fossil fuels and address climate change.

The capabilities of Emerge, established in 2021, extend beyond this project. The joint venture has developed various solar and battery storage initiatives across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, demonstrating its commitment to enhancing energy efficiency and supporting industrial clients in meeting their decarbonization targets. Importantly, Emerge is currently responsible for providing clean energy solutions to more than 40 sites throughout the GCC, showcasing its growing footprint in the renewable energy landscape.

In addition to its collaboration with Turbotim, Emerge has been involved in diverse projects, including a partnership with ADNOC Distribution to install solar panels at over 100 service stations across Abu Dhabi. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions by more than 13,000 tonnes annually, aligning with ADNOC’s broader strategy to diminish operational carbon intensity by 25% by 2030.

Moreover, Emerge’s reach extends into various strategic agreements, such as those with the UAE Ministry of Defence and Miral, emphasising its focus on solar solutions for commercial and industrial applications. These partnerships are instrumental in driving the UAE’s goals of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 while bolstering energy security and operational efficiency.

As Emerge continues to innovate and implement advanced energy solutions, the implications of these projects are profound. The integration of renewable energy sources not only positions companies like Turbotim as leaders in sustainable practices but also contributes significantly to the overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This shift represents a vital step towards a cleaner, greener energy future for the UAE and the wider region.
