Innovo and FieldAI test autonomous robots in Dubai construction site amidst harsh climate

Innovo Group has started introducing general-purpose robots into real-world construction projects in the Middle East, through a partnership with FieldAI , and, honestly, this move aims to test out physical AI in one of the most demanding environments in the region.

The first site on the list is Ghaf Woods in Dubai, a residential development worth AED 1.7 billion by Majid Al Futtaim. According to Innovo’s announcement, this project will serve as a test bed for autonomous monitoring of site progress, real-time documentation, environmental sensing, and data collection in areas that tend to be repetitive, tricky to access, or operationally complex for human teams.

Now, the companies are presenting their collaboration as more than just a trial run. Innovo says it wants active construction sites to become proving grounds for new technologies aimed at boosting productivity, safety, quality control, and timely delivery. This aligns pretty well with the contractor’s broader push into technology, which includes collaborations with universities, startups, and venture capital firms.

As for FieldAI, they’ve built quite a reputation around robots that can function effectively in unstructured environments , which is basically any environment that keeps changing. Construction sites with heavy machinery, moving people, uneven ground, and shifting work fronts are some of the toughest challenges to automate. The company claims its “universal robot brain” is adaptable across different robotic types and tasks, starting with monitoring and modelling, then expanding into logistics, dexterous manipulation, and co-ordination among multiple robots.

The deal also highlights the practical realities of building in the UAE. Ghaf Woods will put the technology through its paces not just in the typical complexity of a big project but also under the intense heat and climate conditions that make outdoor work even more challenging. Innovo argues that if robots can operate reliably in such harsh conditions, they could well handle similar demanding sites elsewhere.

Douglas Zuzic, Innovo’s chief digital officer, said they see their ongoing projects as a practical way to scale up emerging tech, rather than just treating innovation as a sideline. He mentioned that the built environment could serve as a platform to put tools into real operational use, which might really change how construction is done in the UAE and beyond.

Ali Agha, the CEO of FieldAI, shared that the Middle East is set to be a critical region for the company’s expansion over the next decade. He added that the partnership with Innovo provides FieldAI with a chance to deploy its systems on large, complex projects where operational demands are especially high.

This collaboration comes at a time when construction remains one of the least digitised among major industries, something that’s surprising given its key role in economic growth and infrastructure. Innovo is positioning itself at the forefront of that shift. It describes itself as a construction and development firm operating across four continents, with more than 130 projects underway, including residential communities, educational buildings, hotels, commercial hubs, and infrastructure.
