DP World advances climate tech with atmospheric water generation pilot in global logistics network

DP World has recently taken a strategic stake in Hyderabad-based Maithri Aquatech, setting up pilot trials of atmospheric water generation (AWG) technology across its global logistics network, according to a joint statement from both companies.

This investment essentially brings a relatively young Indian climate tech firm closer to one of the world’s biggest logistics operators, which is pretty interesting, right? It also signals a rising interest in decentralised water solutions , especially for industrial settings where secure water supplies are becoming increasingly hard to guarantee.

Maithri Aquatech specialises in atmospheric water generation systems that pull potable water from the humidity in the air. Their main units, sold under the Meghdoot brand, are designed to produce drinking water without relying on traditional pipelines, boreholes, or tanker deliveries. They claim that the technology has potential across various sectors, including commercial sites, industrial facilities, defence installations, logistics operations, and even community water supply.

According to the announcement, the next phase will involve installing these systems in real-world operational conditions throughout DP World’s international network. The goal? To see how well the equipment performs under different climatic and business environments, and to collect data on scale, reliability, and overall practicality. If these pilot programmes go well, both companies say the technology could be expanded more broadly.

This move also aligns with DP World’s broader goals around sustainability. The company has committed to achieving a net positive water impact by 2030, meaning they aim not only to minimise their water use but to actually provide more water than they consume. With over 295 logistics and supply chain facilities across 78 countries, DP World has a substantial platform for testing and expanding solutions like this, which could then be adopted across ports, warehouses, and industrial zones.

As for Maithri, the partnership provides both investment capital and a pathway for large-scale deployment. Their headquarters, manufacturing, and R&D are based in Hyderabad, while they run their international operations from Dubai. That structure places them right at the intersection of India’s clean tech scene and the UAE’s growing focus on innovation and sustainable development.

The collaboration is also framed within the larger context of India-UAE relations. Both sides highlight shared priorities around trade, innovation, and sustainability. Especially considering the Gulf’s ongoing water scarcity issues, this kind of tech is becoming increasingly relevant because many companies are eager to find solutions that lessen dependence on stressed freshwater sources.

Now, atmospheric water generation isn’t a brand-new concept, but it’s still fairly niche , mainly because it comes with some practical limits. The output of these systems depends heavily on humidity levels, temperature, and how much energy they consume, which means performance can vary quite a bit depending on where they’re used. So, testing in real-world environments is crucial. Something that works great in a humid coastal area might be much less effective in a dry, inland location. The real value of DP World’s pilot programme is in exposing the tech to exactly that kind of diverse operational challenge.

Ramkrishna Mukkavilli, Maithri’s founder and managing director, said the investment reflected a belief that water security is vital to the resilience of trade, communities, and ecosystems alike. His comments highlight how climate-focused tech companies are now increasingly pitching water not just as an environmental issue but as a key factor in business continuity.

That makes sense, especially in logistics, where uninterrupted access to utilities and infrastructure is pretty much essential. Ports, distribution centres, and industrial parks often need large quantities of water for staff, sanitation, cooling, or manufacturing processes. In places where water supply might be unreliable or prohibitively expensive, decentralised systems like this could add an extra layer of resilience, although they’re not quite a replacement for traditional sources yet.

The partnership also comes at a time when companies are under mounting pressure to back up their climate commitments with tangible projects rather than just broad promises. For multinationals, it’s no longer enough to just set targets , they need solutions that can be tested, measured, and integrated into everyday operations. The DP World-Maithri deal really fits that trend.
