The United Arab Emirates has unveiled its comprehensive National Air Quality Agenda 2031, aiming to improve air quality, foster green growth, and align climate action with sustainable development goals ahead of reaching Net Zero by 2050.
Her Excellency Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, who is the Minister of Climate Change and Environment, recently underscored just how committed the United Arab Emirates is to improving air quality, making it a national priority under its forward-looking leadership. During the occasion of the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, she pointed out that air quality plays a central role in the country’s broader environmental, climate, and sustainable development goals. “Clean air is an environmental right,” she emphasized, “and it’s also fundamental to the quality of life for everyone living here.” Her Excellency highlighted the government’s strong dedication to a development model that aims to secure a sustainable future for generations yet to come.
This commitment is reflected in the UAE’s National Air Quality Agenda 2031—a strategic plan approved by the Cabinet back in June 2022. The framework strives to unite federal and local authorities, along with the private sector, in a common effort to monitor, manage, and cut down air pollution. The agenda focuses on four key areas: outdoor air quality, indoor air quality, ambient odours, and noise pollution. It’s built on three main pillars—monitoring, mitigation, and management—and puts a lot of emphasis on enablers like clear policy frameworks, boosting technical capacity, scientific research, and the strategic use of technology and financial resources.
At the event launching this agenda, which coincided with the International Day for Clean Air, there were presentations showcasing local scientific research that looked closely at what makes up particulate matter pollution and where it comes from. The event also drew notable participation from international organizations, including the United Nations and the Global Green Growth Institute. This clearly reflects the UAE’s openness to collaboration and global expertise when it comes to tackling environmental challenges.
Her Excellency, Dr. Al Dahak, further explained that the agenda isn’t just about standard regulation. It’s about fostering innovation and creating new economic opportunities, especially in emerging green industries. She framed the nation’s approach to air quality as a way to drive green growth, attract global investments, and bring in talent. This, in turn, helps boost the international competitiveness of UAE companies. “Every policy we put in place to cut air pollutants is a step closer to reducing carbon emissions,” she noted, tying the effective management of air quality directly to the UAE’s ambitious goal of reaching Net Zero by 2050.
