Macao: At the Zayed Sustainability Prize Forum, UAE and China celebrated their multifaceted partnership, spotlighting China’s critical role in advancing the UAE’s clean energy projects, including landmark solar and wind initiatives that underpin the nation’s renewable energy leadership.

In a recent forum held in Macao, Sheikh Saoud Al Mualla, the consul-general of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Hong Kong, highlighted the extensive partnership between the UAE and China, which transcends mere trade. He stated that this collaboration has been pivotal in facilitating the UAE’s ambitious clean energy transition. The forum, part of the Zayed Sustainability Prize Forum associated with the BEYOND Expo 2025, gathered over 300 executives and sustainability experts to tackle pressing global issues. Sheikh Saoud expressed that the partnership encompasses diverse sectors, including energy, logistics, financial services, agriculture, tourism, and space.

The UAE’s clean energy development strategy has gained substantial momentum through Chinese investment and expertise. Chinese companies have played an indispensable role in transforming the UAE’s energy landscape, contributing to a significant optimisation of its energy mix. Notably, projects such as large-scale solar farms and pioneering wind energy demonstrations serve as models of successful China-UAE collaboration in the green energy sector.

During his speech, Sheikh Saoud pointed out the UAE and China’s mutual commitment to sustainable development. He remarked on the strategic importance of their partnership, underscoring the impact it has had on the implementation of landmark solar and wind energy projects. This sentiment was echoed by Dr. Lamya Fawwaz, director of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, who noted how the discussions at the forum focused on fostering collaboration and technological innovation to tackle global sustainability challenges.

Chinese technological advancements and support have been crucial in positioning the UAE as a leader in renewable energy. As highlighted by industry leaders, China holds a prominent position in the global solar power landscape, leading both in generation and supply chain capabilities. This leadership has been mirrored in the UAE’s development of some of the world’s largest solar facilities, which are a testament to the successful implementation of supportive policies and technological cooperation.

William Wang, chief representative for Middle East and Africa at the Sino-International Entrepreneurs Federation, described the Middle East and Africa as regions ripe for future innovation. He emphasised the importance of collaborative platforms that facilitate trust and shared purposes, necessary for scaling up solutions that benefit both local communities and the global community.

As the sustainability partner of the BEYOND Expo, the Zayed Sustainability Prize aims to bridge global initiatives and spur new partnerships, thereby expanding the reach of sustainable solutions across international borders. The participation in such initiatives reflects a concerted effort to cement the UAE’s role in the global sustainability dialogue, aiming for significant progress in the fight against climate change and the promotion of sustainable development worldwide.
